Ship and Mitre, 113 Dale Street, Liverpool, L2 2JH (map)
We’ll be chatting to Alun Parry and other musicians on the night
£3 or FREE to singers/players. Pay on the door upstairs at The Ship and Mitre.
For our first foray into the world of folk music we’re joining Alun Parry as he launches the Woody Guthrie Folk Club at the Ship and Mitre. Alun is a radical, story-telling musician who, as well as performing his own gigs, runs the Working Class Music Festival that we went along to last year, and the Folk Club reflects his musical ethos inspired by the man who mentored Bob Dylan.
‘The Woody Guthrie Folk Club is a space to explore great old songs and showcase some new ones. It will play in the tradition and spirit of the great Woody Guthrie. His songs were sometimes fun, sometimes witty, sometimes biting and often had something incisive to say. They were also great songs to dance and stamp your feet to, while others were beautifully reflective. So that’s pretty much our style too.’
The night will consist of 10 minute sets by singers and players who’ve turned up on the night. For those who, like us, have never been to a folk club before things work a bit differently than at regular gigs: there’s a ‘folk club etiquette’ whereby there’s no talking during performances and you wait until the artist has finished before coming in and out for drinks. Makes sense to us!
